Resort is very easy to get to from the airport. It's just
under 11 miles and there
are only a few turns you have to make. Take a look at the
Mapquest directions here (or
google maps here). If youíre not driving yourself, you can
easily catch a cab at the airport and tell them to take you to Sugar
Most people do rent a car so they can
explore the island. But thereís so much to do at Sugar Beach Resort
that you really donít have to. You can swim in the ocean; take long
walks on the beach; fish in the ocean; snorkel on the reef in front
of the resort; sunbathe on the beach, pool or grassy lawn; have
lunch or dinner at the Sand Witch; grill by the ocean and have
dinner on your lanai; and go out for drinks at the Sand Witch.
Yes, the only problem youíre going to have is
which one to choose. There are a bunch of restaurants in Kiheióno
more than a five- to ten-minute drive awayóranging from high-end
haute cuisine to more casual and affordable places where locals go.
And there are two nice restaurants a couple miles up the beach in
the small port of Maalaea: Buzzís Wharf and The Maalaea Waterfront
And Lahaina is a fifteen- to twenty-minute drive up the coast;
youíll probably want to go to dinner there one night and stroll down
Main Street among the crowd after dinner and look at the shops and
maybe have an ice cream cone for dessert.
We keep a list
of our favorite restaurants in the condo. We like good food, and we
think our recommendations, which cover a range of restaurants, are
Because itís close to the perfect
place to stay: first of all, itís right on the beach. Itís not near
the beach, itís not across the street from the beach; itís not even
overlooking the pool by the beach; itís on the beach. All you see
is ocean and another island in the Pacific. Second: Sugar Beach
Resort is the perfect balance of a resort and a relaxing local
place. Thereís a beautiful heated pool and a store and restaurant
on site. You can even get a massage right at Sugar Beach. And
Elaine and Cindy at Maui Sights and treasures can help you plan
activities if you want. But thereís a local feel as well. You
wonít just be interacting with other tourists. A lot of people
staying at Sugar Beach own condos and live there for a certain
amount of time every year. And the bar is actually a local bar that
all kinds of people go to; itís really one of the best local bars in Kihei. And finally, Sugar Beach is not in one of the more touristy
areas like South Kihei or Kaanapali. Itís by a protected bird sanctuary
and right next to a couple miles of completely undeveloped beach,
and thereís nothing but open land across the street.
Hairdryer, ironing board, bath towels and beach
towels, enough pillows for the sleeper sofa, a coffee pot, all the
pots, pans and utensils you need to cook, a land line phone to make
calls, a TV (with basic cable)
and a DVD player; a radio with a CD player.
We also have a
folder with our recommended restaurants and directions to various
snorkeling spots. And our amazing Mai Tai recipe is included for
your enjoyment. If you make these Mai Tais, theyíll be the best
ones you have on the island.
Our condo is located on the 4th floor of the Plantation building.
It is an end unit so there is an extra window looking south at
Haleakala, Mauiís famed volcano. There is an elevator in the
